Once in Malawi, which is set amongst rolling hills in tropical vegetation, we headed for the sparkling lake, which is truly the most beautiful aspect of Malawi.
Malawi formerly known as Nyasaland, means 'the land of the lake', is about 900 km long and about 160 km wide.
Lake Malawi is the ninth largest lake in the world and the third biggest in Africa, covering a fith of the country.
The lake is part of the ancient Great African Rift Valley and it is supposed to have 600 different species of fish another source says 900!Wow!
Although we saw none, here are supposed to be crocodiles as well and we were advised not to swim after dark because, a local african was eaten alive next to our campsite.
We found a very popular campsite on the beach, which was the place were backpackers and overlanders met and here we spent quite a few days lounging around on paradise beaches, swimming and swopping info and stories.

I was amazed to discover what a lot of traffic there is travelling through Africa. There is a well organised flow of Overlander trucks which travel as far as Kenya and cover the most of the southern countries and some even go all the way through to London.

t is a cheaper alternative for young people who all have to pitch in and work together putting up tents, cooking and getting on or not getting on together.

From time to time we wourld meet up with these trucks with whom we changed our currency and gathered info on the where abouts of campsites and very imortantly the weather, because we based our travel direction on the weather.

We headed up north along the lake towards the Tanzanian border and it got more hot and clammy by the day. Peter was showing the first unmistakable signs of Malaria, the springs of our dearly beloved Landrover where more than overbent, and everything thet could possible come loose did, and rattled.
It was truly an extraordinary & amazing vehicle, never to have let us down so far.

After hearing from travellers passing by that up north there had been nothing but heavy downpours for weeks, with bad aftereffects of flooding and cholera epidemics, and since the border officials had gone to no effort to make us want to enter their country, on the contrary they disuaded us with bribes that were equal to daylight robbery.

We quickly decided that at the time the odds where against us to go any further, since there was still a lot more to be discovered in the beautiful sunny south.

Peter was able to spend some days recovering on the beach and then we headed back to Kariba Dam in Zimbabwe via Lusaka.
